Set in the spirit of L. Frank Baum’s classic, the “Tin Man”, which aired over three nights in 2007, follows the adventures of DG, a waitress and part-time student, as she travels through the mystical world of “The O. Z. (Outer Zone)”, discovering her hidden past.

Dorothy Gale (Zooey Deschanel)  is a small-town waitress who feels that she does not fit into her Kansas farm life and has visions of a lavender-eyed woman warning her that a storm is coming. Her visions are realized when the sorceress Azkadellia (Kathleen Robertson), tyrannical ruler of the O.Z. (Outer Zone), sends her Longcoat soldiers through a “travel storm” to kill Dorothy. Dorothy escapes through the storm into the O.Z. and befriends several of its inhabitants: Glitch (Alan Cummings) , who had half of his brain removed by Azkadellia; Wyatt Cainn (Neal McDonough), a former “Tin Man” law enforcer who was locked in an iron suit for years as punishment for opposing Azkadellia; and Raw (Raoul Trujillo), a “viewer” whose people have been enslaved by Azkadellia.

Alice; using the classic Lewis Carroll books Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass as a jumping off point, writer/director Nick Willing has created the modern-day story of Alice Hamilton (Caterina Scorsone), a fiercely independent twenty-something who suddenly finds herself on the other side of a looking glass. She is a stranger in an outlandish city of twisted towers and casinos built out of playing cards, all under the rule of the deliciously devilish Queen of Hearts (Oscar winner Kathy Bates) who’s not very happy about Alice’s arrival.

In the course of her adventure, Alice enlists the help of an array of characters including the resistance fighter Hatter (Andrew-Lee Potts), resistance leader Dodo (Tim Curry) and the White Knight (Matt Frewer).

Rounding out the stellar cast are Colm Meaney as the King of Hearts, Harry Dean Stanton as Caterpillar, Alessandro Juliani as 9 of Clubs, Timothy Webber as Carpenter, Alex Diakun as Ratcatcher, and Eugene Lipinski as Doctors Dee and Dum.

For this re-imagined adaptation, writer/director Nick Willing mines the bizarre ingenuity and twisted logic of Carroll’s work to create a daringly different, boldly colorful and delightfully skewed dreamscape of his own. Willing also directed the record-breaking, Emmy-winning miniseries Tin Manfor Syfy in 2007. Serving as executive producers for this ambitious new event are Matthew O’Connor and Lisa Richardson from Reunion Pictures, Jamie Brown from Studio Eight and RHI Entertainment’s Robert Halmi Sr. and Robert Halmi Jr.

A lot of people have compared OUAT to The 10th Kingdom, many even saying that OUAT is actually not new, but that it is just rehashing The 10th Kingdom. Which is of course, not true. But they do share the same general premise, in that it’s about fairy tales set in, more or less, a very real world, with real characters dealing with ordinary problems. It ran on NBC back in 2000, as five heavily promoted two hour nights, as a miniseries with only ten episodes. So the story is complete, and you don’t have to worry about any loose ends. It received a lot of critical praise, but very low ratings, which is why you’ve probably never heard of it. It’s supposed to be very good (though I haven’t seen it myself), and if you’re craving a live action TV story of fairy tales, this is what you’ll want to watch.

Like Once Upon a Time or Grimm? Give Namesake a try!

savvyliterate:

Namesake is the story of Emma Crewe, a woman who discovers she can visit other worlds. She finds out that these are places she already knows – fantasy and fairy lands made famous through the spoken word, literature and cinema. Her power as a Namesake forces her to act as a protagonist in these familiar stories as she figures out how to get home.

But as she travels, she discovers that those controlling her story have their own selfish goals in mind – and her fate is the key to everyone’s happy ending.

Launched in October 2010 and updating every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Namesake is the co-creation of Isabelle Melançon and Megan Lavey-Heaton. If you enjoy fairy tales, please be sure to give this webcomic a try!
